Rain/Snow will commence from today in J&K, plains will also receive snow

Detailed Weather Update

A Western Disturbance is currently passing over Jammu and Kashmir. Under its influence, rain/snow showers are expected to commence from today late afternoon onwards (starting from higher reaches of north and central Kashmir).

Some plains may experience light snowfall, especially in the evening/night hours today. A moderate spell is also possible in a few areas. Maximum chances are for parts of south Kashmir. The weather system isn’t strong, so no significant accumulation is expected in most plains.

One or two places in higher reaches can record up to 2 feet of snow.
A good spell of snowfall is also possible at the tourist destinations of Sonamarg (3 – 9 inches), Gulmarg (1 – 6 inches), and Pahalgam (2 – 8 inches).

Snowfall chances for plains of Kashmir:
Srinagar, Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Budgam, and Ganderbal = 30-60% chances (0.5 cm – 3 inches) (Average = 1 cm)
Pulwama and Anantnag = 60% (1 cm – 3 inches) (Average = 1.25 inches)
Kulgam and Shopian = 60 – 80% (1 cm – 4 inches) (Average = 2 inches)
This is a rough estimate, so variations can occur!
No accumulation in some plains is also possible!

Generally, light to moderate rain showers are expected at many places in Jammu region. A short heavy spell is also possible at one or two places. Snowfall can occur at higher reaches of Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts.
Landslides/shooting stones along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway are also possible.

Improvement in weather is expected at most places in Jammu and Kashmir from the 30 December morning onwards, however, a few places can continue to record rain/snow showers till evening.

Minimum temperatures will fall significantly during the first week of January!
